I love this video. Sonia is a very happy baby. She smiles all the time, but doesn't full on laugh much. She makes the face but not the noise most of the time. The only one she truly laughs for is Than, like in this video. I wanted to record her reaction to him. Easy to tell whose her favorite right?

Incredibly sweet, but crossing the line into creepy
Sibling relationships are always an interesting thing. As a parent you hope your children will have a good close relationship. Than's relationship to his sister is already a special one, and a bit strange.
Ryan and I always knew we wanted a second child. We hoped we would have another, but never knew if life or more specifically my health would cooperate. So it was something we never mentioned or discussed with Than. I didn't want him all excited for a sibling that might never happen. So imagine my surprise when suddenly he starts telling everyone he is going to be a big brother, that he was going to have a little sister. At the time I didn't think there was a chance I was pregnant, in fact I was supposed to start a round of fertility drugs soon to try to jump start my system into cooperating. I was trying to get him to stop telling people this, when I realized that he was right. I was in fact pregnant and it almost exactly timed out to when he started telling people. So already a little in the creepy category.
Now a key part of this was that he was adamant from the get go that he was going to have a little sister. Then early on (I was only about 8 weeks pregnant) Than turned to me one day and informed me, "My baby sister's name is Sonia." When I seemed confused he very slowly, very clearly, and very emphatically repeated, "My baby sister's name is Sonia." I tried several times to tell him that it could be a girl but it could be a boy, we didn't know yet. To which his response always was "it could be, but its not." He always said it with such utter confidence and conviction that we never even considered boys names. To add to the oddness of the whole thing we have never figured out where he got the name. He's never met a child name Sonia, its not a common name, and we can't trace it back to any book, movie or tv show he's even seen. Even his preschool teacher is completely stumped on this one. But he was obviously right.
Clearly their connection is a strong one. He adores his sister. I love to watch the way they react to each other. They both just light up when they see each other.
Than is so incredibly helpful. He delights in the big brother role. He loves getting things like diapers for you. Enjoys picking out which outfit she's going to wear (though his choices are sometimes "interesting"), and is so proud when he gets to help feed or change her. Which I've got say has made adding a second child to the mix so much easier than it could have been.
Thankfully we've had no jealousy issues. He may not be thrilled if we can't do something or get him something right away because we are busy with Sonia, he never gets upset about it. He is also incredibly protective of her. If she makes the slightest noise or cries even the tiniest bit he runs to her to check on her or comes running to demand you come in and take care of her.
I'm mostly writing this so one day when they are older and ready to strangle each other over something trivial that I can point to this and say, "See, you mean more to each other than anyone else can ever understand, and have right from the beginning."

Family Photos 2012
It's been an eventful year plus
Yes I know it's been a ridiculously long time since I've posted. I'm going to summarize what's happened and then force myself to post regularly.
Initially I wasn't posting because Than and I got very sick and it dragged on for months, so I had nothing particularly fun or interesting to say. Then suddenly I had something very interesting to say but not something I felt comfortable discussing in such a public forum for a long time.
I was (to our great joy) pregnant! But since Than came so early I didn't want to make it this public until we were past the viability point, which takes a really long time to get to. By then I wasn't doing all that well and things were chaotic, so posting fell to the way side. Then our darling baby girl arrived and who has then energy to do ANYTHING with a new baby and very active 4 year old. Thankfully she is now 3 months old and we seem to have hit our stride. So hopefully I can actually keep up with this again, if for no other reason than to post photos and updates for the family.

Family Photos
Here are the long awaited family photos. We have been trying to get these done since May. First it was nearly impossible to schedule a day on the weekend to have the photos taken due to Ryan's insane schedule. Then everytime we managed to find a day when both Ryan and the photographer was available, we would get rained out. That happened several times, so I was thrilled it finally worked out. It was a bonus that it was such a beautiful Indian Summer day, before the cold and rain came back. I loved the fact that Dustin was visiting so we managed to get a few photos with him too.
The photos turned out pretty well considering Than was totally uncooperative. He saw this little play area with tractor and construction toys as soon as we got there and that was all he wanted to do. He did NOT want to mess around taking pictures when he could be PLAYING. Thankfully Tracy is amazing with kids and always manages to get great photos anyway. She managed to get him to smile, but a strange and unexpected side effect of that was that Than kept doing jazz hands in every photo. As a result it looks like he is waving and I couldn't stop laughing. Which probably ruined more photos than the jazz hands themselves.

Halloween
Just a quick post for the moment. Here are pictures of Than's Halloween Costume. He is a minion from Despicable Me. Partially because he loves the movie, but probably more because Ryan really wants minions.

Very cute, a good costume as long as he is wearing the goggles. Otherwise people weren't too clear on what he was supposed to be.
