It is still pretty amazing to us how far he has come and how great he is doing considering that he was so tiny and so early. He is still a bit small for his age, but he is happy, healthy and hitting all the developmental markers. In many ways he is too smart for our own good. He is clearly always thinking...usually "how can I take that apart?" He is currently in the process of unweaving the rattan bases of our dining room chairs, taking down the gates that he doesn't like, etc. When we put away all the DVDs he had to get creative, so he figured out how to get them out of the DVD player itself. Most kids when they see a new toy that moves or makes noise they smile and laugh, maybe try to grab it...Than gets intensely focused and just tries to figure out how to make it work. Which means he is also causing as much trouble as he possibly can.
My latest issue is that as he has several more teeth coming in, he has started biting. Not out of anger, but just for the sake of it. He particularly like biting noses; which is pretty funny, and we finally figured out a defense (for a while there we were too busy laughing to effectively stop it) we blow in his face and it distracts him. However he doesn't limit it to the nose; he bites Mama whenever he can, usually not terribly hard but since I bruise ridiculously easily I am getting a lot of funny looks. People seem to think I am in an abusive relationship...I am waiting to see how long it takes before some lady comes up in the grocery store and tells me that "he isn't worth it" and I get to explain that my husband isn't beating me up, my baby is.
Little Nose Biter...
His 1st birthday party was fun, thanks largely to our very good friends Erin & Derek who were willing to host it until we get a bigger place. I made him a birthday cake to destroy, and as you can see we stripped him down and put down a plastic tarp and let him go at it.
He didn't like the cake or icing much. It was far too sweet for him, but he enjoyed seeing the other kids and being the center of attention. We invited my friend Jenn (a fellow Navy wife) and her three kids. We trade babysitting back and forth so the kids are really close and adore each other, so Than always loves to see them. Plus he loves to have his picture taken, he is the biggest ham on the planet. He actually cries when you put the camera away, and will actively pose when he sees a flash.
