Train Excursion

We had an interesting day yesterday. Our realtor was having an open house at our place from 1-3pm, so we had to figure out something fun to do with Than while we had to be out of the house. This was further complicated by the fact that it was very cold and rainy out. However I had discovered a pamphlet a few days before for an old steam train that wasn't very far away. You go in a early 1900's coal powered steam train up some beautiful scenery (especially with all the fall colors) that follows along the Connecticut River for about half an hour and then you go back. Now if you want you can get off at the halfway point and go on an old riverboat, but it was way too cold for that to sound like fun.

As you can see it was a beautiful train that has been lovingly maintained.

However it wasn't nearly as much fun to be outside of it. Thankfully this photo was taken when the freezing rain had slowed to more of a drizzle.

We ended up having a wonderful time. Thankfully Than was enchanted whenever the train was moving. He loved every minute of it. The only minor complaint was that because it was so cold outside and nice and toasty inside the windows kept fogging up. So we were constantly wiping the fog off so we could see the beautiful scenery. The sound of the train and the whistle was both charming and some how soothing, though I really wouldn't want to be one the houses right next to the tracks with the train passing by every hour or more.

We were thrilled Than loved it so much. This was how he spent pretty much the whole trip, with his nose pressed up against the glass. We are looking forward to doing it again, on a nice warm sunny day and probably do the riverboat portion as well. It is amazing that this is so close by and relatively inexpensive and I had never heard anyone mention it before.

It was a great time for just having to find somewhere to go during the open house, which actually went better than we expected. We thought for sure since the weather was so bad no one would show, but we did at least have one walk through. So a worth while day and a trip to remember.
